15 Must-Have Apps for Traveling in Tanzania

January 15, 2026 4 min read Cleven Godson

Planning a trip to Tanzania? Your smartphone is your best travel companion — but only if you have the right apps installed. After years of living here and working with tourists, here are the 15 essential apps you need before landing in Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, or Zanzibar.

Navigation & Maps

1. Maps.me (Offline Maps)

Why you need it: Tanzania has spotty cellular coverage, especially in national parks and rural areas. Maps.me lets you download detailed offline maps of the entire country.

Pro tip: Download the Tanzania map while you still have WiFi at home. The Serengeti alone is about 14,750 km² — you don't want to be downloading that on a 3G connection.

Download: Free on iOS and Android

2. Google Maps (With Offline Areas)

Google Maps has better real-time traffic data for cities like Dar es Salaam and Arusha. Download offline areas for:

  • Dar es Salaam
  • Arusha & Moshi
  • Zanzibar (Stone Town + beaches)
  • Mwanza

Money & Payments

3. M-Pesa (Mobile Money)

This is the big one. Tanzania runs on mobile money. M-Pesa (by Vodacom) is accepted almost everywhere — from street food vendors to supermarkets. You can even pay for Uber with it.

How to set it up:

  1. Get a Vodacom SIM card (available at the airport)
  2. Register for M-Pesa at any Vodacom shop (bring your passport)
  3. Deposit cash at any M-Pesa agent

Pro tip: Load at least 200,000 TZS (~$75 USD) to start. You'll use it constantly.

4. Wise (formerly TransferWise)

Best app for converting currency and getting the real exchange rate. You can also get a Wise debit card that works at Tanzanian ATMs with low fees.

Communication

5. WhatsApp

This isn't optional. Everyone in Tanzania uses WhatsApp — tour guides, hotels, restaurants, even government offices. If a business has a phone number, they have WhatsApp.

Pro tip: When booking safari tours or hotels, ask for their WhatsApp number. You'll get faster responses than email.

6. Airalo (eSIM)

If your phone supports eSIM, skip the airport SIM card hassle. Airalo has Tanzania data plans starting at $5 for 1GB. Install it before you leave home.

Transportation

7. Uber Tanzania

Uber works in Dar es Salaam and is expanding to other cities. Much safer and more reliable than negotiating with random taxis. Prices are also lower.

8. Bolt (for Zanzibar)

Bolt is more popular in Zanzibar than Uber. Same concept — download both to compare prices.

9. GetYourGuide

For booking tours, safaris, and activities with free cancellation. This is my top recommendation because:

  • Verified reviews from real travelers
  • Free cancellation on most bookings
  • Secure payment (no cash to sketchy operators)
  • 24/7 customer support

Health & Safety

10. First Aid by Red Cross

Offline first aid instructions. Useful when you're hours away from a hospital in the Serengeti.

11. What3Words

This app divides the world into 3m x 3m squares, each with a unique 3-word address. Useful for:

  • Telling your safari guide exactly where you are
  • Sharing locations when there are no street addresses
  • Emergency services (Tanzania rescue teams use it)

Language

12. Google Translate (Offline Swahili)

Download the Swahili language pack for offline use. Even basic phrases like "Habari" (Hello) and "Asante" (Thank you) go a long way.

Essential phrases:

  • Habari — Hello
  • Asante sana — Thank you very much
  • Pole pole — Slowly slowly (you'll hear this on Kilimanjaro!)
  • Hakuna matata — No worries (yes, it's real Swahili)

Photography & Content

13. Snapseed

Free, powerful photo editing for your safari shots. The "Selective" tool is perfect for brightening animals against bright skies.

14. Star Walk 2

Tanzania has some of the clearest night skies in the world. This app helps you identify stars and constellations — perfect for those Serengeti camping nights.

Bonus: Travel Planning

15. TripIt

Automatically organizes your flights, hotels, and bookings into one itinerary. Forward your confirmation emails and it does the rest.
