Kilimanjaro Travel Guide 2026: Routes, Tech Tips, Booking & Preparation
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro — the highest mountain in Africa — is on many travelers’ bucket lists. But the reality of preparing for a multi-day high-altitude trek in Tanzania brings unique challenges: altitude sickness, offline environments, tipping porters, and smart booking decisions.
This guide is written for Western hikers who want to use technology wisely and book safely.
Is Kilimanjaro Connected? Internet & SIM Card Guide
Connectivity on Kilimanjaro is very limited and decreases with altitude.
- Vodacom has the best coverage up to around 3,800m–4,000m on most routes.
- Above 4,000m, expect almost no mobile signal.
- WiFi is available only at the starting hotels in Moshi or Arusha, and a few mid-altitude camps on luxury climbs.
Recommendation: Buy a Vodacom SIM card in Moshi or Arusha before starting your trek. Download all maps, emergency contacts, and offline guides while you still have strong internet.
Local Expert Tip: Use Maps.me with offline maps downloaded. Many climbers rely on GPS apps like Gaia GPS or AllTrails for route tracking.
Payments & Money on Kilimanjaro
- All reputable operators require payment in USD (bank transfer or online).
- Porter and guide tips must be paid in Tanzanian Shillings (TZS) or crisp USD at the end of the climb.
- There are no ATMs on the mountain. Withdraw everything you need in Moshi or Arusha.
Budget for Tips (per person):
- Standard 7–8 day climb: $250 – $350 USD equivalent in cash for the crew.
